Is Milan Safe?
Milan is Italy's most cosmopolitan city — sophisticated, efficient, and generally safe for solo travelers. The Milanese are businesslike rather than effusive, but you'll find genuine warmth when you need help. Petty theft is the chief risk, concentrated around the Duomo and Central Station; beyond those zones, the city moves at a calm, purposeful pace.

Common Scams & How to Avoid Them
Rose gifting — a man places a rose in your hand, then demands payment. Hand it back and keep moving.
Distraction theft — someone spills something on you while a partner takes your bag. Stay alert after any bump or spill.
Taxi overcharging — always confirm a flat rate or running meter from the airport before you get in.
Counterfeit goods — illegal to buy. Don't purchase from street vendors, regardless of the price.
Fake monks — less common but present. Do not accept unsolicited "gifts" from strangers.
Health & Medical
Call 118 for medical emergencies in Italy, or 112 for the EU-standard universal number — English-speaking operators are available. Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico and Ospedale Niguarda both offer English-language support. Farmacie (marked by a green cross) are well-stocked. EU citizens should bring their EHIC; non-EU travelers should confirm travel insurance covers Italy.
Solo Women Travelers
Milan has a more reserved street culture than Rome or Naples, which many solo women find refreshing. The business-focused atmosphere means fewer unsolicited interactions, and evening dining alone is entirely comfortable — the Milanese are used to it. Navigli and Brera are ideal for solo evening strolls.
