01 — About the City

Tampa, Florida

Tampa is the Gulf Coast city that got serious about itself. For decades it coasted on Busch Gardens, spring break, and cigar nostalgia — and none of that is wrong, exactly, but it misses what Tampa has quietly become: a genuinely interesting mid-sized city with a world-class food and drink scene, one of the most distinctive historic neighborhoods in the American South, and a waterfront that finally lives up to its potential.

Ybor City is Tampa at its most irreplaceable — a cigar manufacturing district built by Cuban, Spanish, and Italian immigrants in the 1880s, too architecturally intact to have been bulldozed by urban renewal. The Columbia Restaurant has served Cuban food in the same building since 1905. Solo travel works beautifully here: the bar culture is welcoming, the neighborhoods are walkable within themselves, and the city rewards unhurried attention.

02 — The Plan

Your 48 Hours

Day One — Ybor City · Columbia Restaurant · Tampa Museum of Art
9:00 AM
Ybor City Historic District
15 blocks of late-19th-century brick buildings built by Cuban, Spanish, and Italian cigar workers — Tampa was once the cigar capital of the world, producing 500 million cigars a year.
Walk Seventh Avenue before the crowds arrive; the free-roaming descendant chickens are most active at dawn.
12:00 PM
Hand-Rolled Cigars on La Séptima
Several shops on Seventh Avenue still employ hand-rollers. El Sol Cigars is the most authentic — watch the rollers work and buy directly from the source.
Tampa-style cigars use a different leaf blend from Cuban production, developed by the immigrant workers who built the industry.
1:00 PM
Lunch: Columbia Restaurant
Florida's oldest restaurant, open continuously since 1905 — the 1905 Salad prepared tableside, Cuban sandwich, and ropa vieja are the canonical orders.
The bar serves the full menu and is excellent for solo diners, even without a reservation.
3:00 PM
Tampa Museum of Art
On the Riverwalk, with a particularly strong Greek and Roman antiquities section inside a building that changes color through the day.
Allow 90 minutes, then walk north on the Riverwalk toward Armature Works.
7:00 PM
Dinner: Armature Works
A converted 1910 streetcar building housing Tampa's best food hall and multiple bar programs on the Hillsborough River — the rooftop bar has the best view in the city.
Follow with Ybor City's live-music bars Thursday through Saturday, when the neighborhood is genuinely lively.

Day Two — Hyde Park · Bern's Steak House · St. Pete
9:00 AM
Hyde Park Village & Morning Walk
Bungalows and Mediterranean Revival homes on tree-lined streets, developed in the 1910s–20s. Buddy Brew Coffee is the best independent coffee in Tampa.
Walk South Boulevard and Magnolia Avenue for the finest houses in the neighborhood.
10:30 AM
Henry B. Plant Museum
Housed in the former 1891 Tampa Bay Hotel, a Moorish Revival palace with 13 minarets — the most visually remarkable building in Florida.
Theodore Roosevelt staged the Rough Riders here before Cuba.
2:00 PM
St. Petersburg Day Trip (Optional)
25 minutes across the bay: the Salvador Dalí Museum, one of the most important Dalí collections outside Spain, plus the St. Pete waterfront.
Return by 6pm for the Bern's reservation, or stay in Tampa for the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts.
7:00 PM
Dinner: Bern's Steak House
The most singular restaurant experience in Florida — a family-owned steakhouse since 1956, with a 675,000-bottle wine cellar, the largest private collection in the world.
Book the Harry Waugh Dessert Room upstairs separately from dinner — each booth is a converted wine barrel with its own entertainment system.
