Zürich, Switzerland

Zürich is Switzerland's largest city and its financial capital, but its identity runs deeper than banks and watches. The Limmat River splits the Altstadt in two, Lake Zürich opens to the south at the end of Bahnhofstrasse, and the hills above the city offer views across the entire Swiss Mittelland to the Alps on days when the air is clear enough to see that far.
The city rewards the traveller who moves between its registers: the medieval guildhall streets of Niederdorf on one side, the polished commercial boulevard of Bahnhofstrasse on the other, and the post-industrial creativity of Zürich West in the evening. This guide gives you 48 hours built around how Zürich actually works.

Your 48 Hours

Day One — Altstadt · Bahnhofstrasse · Lakefront
9:00 AM
Grossmünster Cathedral
The twin-towered Romanesque cathedral on the right bank, built 1100–1220. Ulrich Zwingli launched the Swiss Reformation here in 1519. Climb the Karlsturm for the first panorama of Zürich — rooflines, river, and distant Alps on clear mornings.
The tower climb is CHF 5 and takes eight minutes. Come before 10am for clean light and the least company.
10:00 AM
Fraumünster & the Chagall Windows
Cross Münsterbrücke to the left bank — a 13th-century convent church containing five stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall, installed 1970, among the finest works of his later career.
The windows read best on a morning with gentle light. Arrive before the tour groups at 11am; the Giacometti rose window in the north transept is frequently overlooked and equally extraordinary.
11:15 AM
Niederdorf & the Lindenhügel
Walk north through Niederdorf, the cobbled right-bank quarter of bookshops and coffee houses, then cross to the Lindenhügel — a shaded promontory with Zürich's most photographed view down the Limmat.
The Polybahn funicular from Central station to ETH Zürich is a 45-second ride, included in the ZVV pass, to an elevated terrace with a clean view down the river.
1:00 PM
Lunch: Zeughauskeller or Kronenhalle
Zeughauskeller on Bahnhofstrasse — an 18th-century arsenal converted to a beer hall with one of the best schnitzel and rösti menus in the city at honest prices. Kronenhalle on Rämistrasse is Zürich's most celebrated traditional restaurant, since 1924.
Zeughauskeller is the best-value lunch in central Zürich — order the Züri Geschnetzeltes over rösti.
2:30 PM
Bahnhofstrasse & Paradeplatz
Walk south along Bahnhofstrasse — 1.4km of one of the world's most expensive retail corridors — to Paradeplatz, the historic centre of Swiss banking, where Credit Suisse and UBS have faced off for a century.
Sprüngli at Paradeplatz has the best Luxemburgerli in Switzerland — the ground-floor pastry counter is far cheaper than the café upstairs.
4:00 PM
Lake Zürich & Bürkliplatz
Bahnhofstrasse opens onto Lake Zürich at Bürkliplatz. ZSG lake boats depart here for a 90-minute tour of the inner lake, with Alpine views on clear days. Or walk the Seequai promenade south toward Zürichhorn.
The ZSG lake boats are included in the ZVV Tageskarte. The Le Corbusier Pavilion at Zürichhorn is free and worth twenty minutes.
7:30 PM
Dinner: Frau Gerolds Garten or Hiltl
Frau Gerolds Garten in Zürich West, a summer garden restaurant between railway viaducts, is one of the finest outdoor dining atmospheres in the city. Hiltl on Sihlstrasse is the world's oldest continuously operating vegetarian restaurant, since 1898.
Frau Gerolds operates May–October only. In winter, Hiltl's buffet format is the better anchor.
Day Two — Kunsthaus · Seefeld · Uetliberg
9:00 AM
Kunsthaus Zürich
The finest art museum in Switzerland — medieval panel paintings through Monet, Picasso, Munch, and the world's largest Giacometti collection. The 2021 Chipperfield extension more than doubled the space.
Book online at kunsthaus.ch — the extension sells out on weekends. The dedicated Giacometti room in natural light is the anchor; allow three hours minimum.
12:00 PM
Kunstmeile & Seefeldquai
Walk south from Kunsthaus along the Kunstmeile — a concentration of galleries on Heimplatz and Rämistrasse — to the Seefeldquai lakeside promenade, Zürich's most pleasant residential district.
Kafi Deli on Seefeldstrasse for a excellent cortado and sandwich, or Conditorei Schober back in the Altstadt for the benchmark Zürich Kaffee und Kuchen.
1:00 PM
Lunch in Seefeld
Memories of China on Dufourstrasse has been the most respected Chinese restaurant in Switzerland since 1975 — formal and precise. Marktküche on Seefeldstrasse offers a daily-changing market menu at a lower price.
Both beat returning to the Altstadt density for lunch on Day 2. Book Memories of China ahead at busier times.
2:30 PM
Uetliberg — Zürich's Local Mountain
871m above sea level, reached by the S10 train from Hauptbahnhof in 23 minutes. The summit panorama on a clear day covers the entire Swiss Mittelland to the Alps, occasionally including Mont Blanc.
The ridge trail to Felsenegg takes 90 minutes and ends at a cable car down to Adliswil. Don't attempt in poor conditions — the path gets slippery on leaf-covered sections.
4:30 PM
Swiss National Museum (Landesmuseum)
Adjacent to the Hauptbahnhof in a neo-Gothic castle from 1898 — the comprehensive history of Switzerland, with the best armour and weapons collection in the country.
Free on Mondays, CHF 10 otherwise. The medieval collection upstairs is more interesting than the ground-floor overview — closes at 5pm.
7:30 PM
Final Dinner: Kronenhalle
Zürich's most historically important restaurant, unchanged since the 1920s — Miró, Picasso, Giacometti, and Matisse on the walls, Zürcher Geschnetzeltes and one of the city's finest wine cellars on the menu.
Reservation essential at kronenhalle.com, well ahead. The downstairs bar opens without reservation for lighter food alongside the wine programme.

Is Zürich Safe?

Zürich is one of the safest cities on earth. Crime against tourists is rare to the point of statistical insignificance. The city is meticulously maintained, its public transport is world-class, and solo travel at any hour presents minimal risk. The only significant practical concern is the cost of living — Zürich is among Europe's most expensive cities. Budget carefully, but travel with complete confidence.

Common Scams & How to Avoid Them
ATM card skimming — use bank-branch ATMs only, and always cover the keypad when entering your PIN.
Hotel minibar / extras — review your bill carefully before checkout; charges can be added without notification.
Currency exchange kiosks — airport and tourist kiosks offer poor rates. Use bank ATMs for the best exchange.
Health & Medical
Dial 117 for police, 144 for ambulance, 118 for fire, or 112 for the universal emergency line. UniversitätsSpital Zürich (USZ) is one of Europe's leading hospitals. Apotheken (pharmacies) are common and staff typically speak English. Tap water is exceptional quality — travel insurance is strongly recommended given Switzerland's high healthcare costs.
Solo Women Travelers
Zürich is one of the best cities in the world for solo women travelers. Safety concerns are minimal across the entire city at any hour. Langstrasse has a visible red-light district but is not dangerous and is home to some of Zürich's best nightlife. Women travel solo throughout the city at all hours without incident — this is as safe as solo travel gets.
