Is Amsterdam Safe?
Amsterdam is one of Europe's most welcoming cities for solo travelers — compact, English-speaking, and almost universally bicycle-friendly. Violent crime against tourists is rare. The realistic risks are environmental (bikes, canals, crowds) and opportunistic (pickpockets, tourist pricing), not crime in the conventional sense.
Amsterdam has 880,000 bicycles and 900,000 people, and the cycling infrastructure gives bikes near-absolute priority — this is the #1 cause of tourist injury in the city. The canals, meanwhile, have no barriers in most places; over 25 people drown annually, primarily late at night and alcohol-involved.

Cycling & Canal Safety
Bike lanes often run between pavement and road and can look like pavement — they aren't. Cyclists move silently at 20–25km/h with absolute right of way. Look both ways before stepping off any kerb.
Canal edges have no barriers and a 1.5–2 metre drop to cold water. Walk on the pavement side at night, give the edge a wide berth, and never sit on the edge after dark.
Trams, metro, and night buses are safe at all hours; the main transit risk is stepping directly into a bike lane when alighting.
Common Scams & How to Avoid Them
Centraal Station pickpockets use a classic distraction-and-dip — bag in front, phone in pocket, and find a wall before consulting your phone.
Fake weed sellers approach with street cannabis, which is illegal outside licensed coffeeshops and often not what it claims to be — buy only from a licensed shop with a visible menu.
Unlicensed taxi touts outside Centraal Station and Schiphol offer flat rates that balloon on arrival — use Uber, Bolt, or the official taxi rank.
Health & Medical
The Netherlands has an excellent healthcare system and most doctors and pharmacists speak English. For minor ailments, try an Apotheek (pharmacy) before seeking a GP. GGD Amsterdam's health line (088 003 0600) offers after-hours medical advice, and each district has a Nachtapotheek (night pharmacy) for late-night needs.
Solo Travelers
You have no backup — build margin into your evenings and know your route before you leave. Keep your phone charged and tell someone your plan. The city is very walkable and easy to navigate; these are precautions, not warnings.
