Is Athens Safe?
Athens is one of the safer European capitals for solo travelers. The historic core — Monastiraki, Plaka, the Acropolis slopes, Koukaki, and Kolonaki — is walkable, well-lit, and genuinely comfortable day and night. The main considerations are petty theft in crowded tourist areas, the Omonia Square district at night, and occasional political demonstrations near the university and parliament — none of which represent serious danger for a visitor following this guide's routes.

Getting Around Safely
Metro (OASA) is clean, reliable, and air-conditioned — essential in summer heat. Validate your ticket before boarding.
Walking covers Plaka, Monastiraki, and Koukaki easily — the Acropolis slopes are cobblestone, so wear grip shoes.
Beat app / taxis — use Beat (Greece's dominant rideshare) or licensed yellow taxis; agree fares in advance for airport runs.
Night buses run limited overnight service — Beat app or a taxi is preferred after midnight.
Common Scams & How to Avoid Them
Monastiraki flea market pickpockets — the Sunday market is one of the busiest spots in Athens. Wear a crossbody bag worn in front.
Taxi overcharging (airport route) — use the Beat app or agree on the fixed airport fare (€38 daytime / €54 night) before entering.
Bar "invitation" scam — friendly strangers near Syntagma recommend a bar, and the bill arrives wildly inflated. Decline unsolicited recommendations.
Friendship bracelet approach — common near the Parthenon: a bracelet is tied on your wrist and payment demanded. Decline firmly and walk away.
Health & Medical
Dial 112 for all emergencies. Evangelismos Hospital in Kolonaki is the main central hospital with an English-speaking emergency department. SOS Doctors (1016) provides home and hotel visits 24 hours for non-emergency illness. Pharmacies (farmakeio) are marked by a green cross and widespread. Heat is a real risk in summer — carry water and schedule the Acropolis for 8–9am or after 5pm.
Solo Women Travelers
Athens is comfortable for solo women travelers. The café and taverna culture is genuinely welcoming to single diners — sitting alone in Koukaki or Kolonaki is entirely normal. Use the Beat app rather than hailing street taxis at night, stay on the lit main streets in Monastiraki and Psyrri after midnight, and trust your instincts. Koukaki and Kolonaki are the most naturally solo-friendly for after-dinner drinks.
