Is Dubrovnik Safe?
Dubrovnik is one of the safest cities in Europe for solo travelers. Violent crime is extremely rare; the compact Old Town, dense tourist presence, and Croatian police visibility make it a low-risk environment at any hour. The safety considerations are almost entirely about crowds — summer congestion creates pickpocket opportunities in the narrow alleys — and pricing, since the Old Town has some of the most aggressive tourist pricing on the Adriatic.

Getting Around Safely
City Bus — Bus 6 connects the Old Town to Lapad and Gruž Harbour; safe and reliable.
Taxi / Bolt — metered taxis outside the Pile Gate, or the Bolt app for longer journeys.
Ferries — public Jadrolinija ferries to the islands are safe, scenic, and inexpensive.
Cable Car — well-maintained, runs until 11pm in summer.
Common Scams & How to Avoid Them
Cruise ship crowds — up to 10,000 day-trippers fill an Old Town built for 1,500 residents. Pickpocket risk concentrates 10am–4pm — keep bags zipped and in front.
Restaurant pricing — restaurants facing the Stradun charge 2–3x the price of identical food one street back. Check the menu and price list before sitting.
Unlicensed accommodation touts — people offering rooms at the ferry terminal or bus station may be unlicensed. Use Booking.com or established hotels.
Heat and sun — the limestone walls and pavements radiate heat; the Old Town in July can feel 5°C hotter than the actual temperature. Carry water — the Onofrio Fountain at Pile Gate is free.
Health & Medical
Dial 112 for all emergencies. Dubrovnik General Hospital in Lapad is the main public hospital, 15–20 minutes by bus or taxi from the Old Town. Pharmacies (ljekarna) are marked by a green cross and found throughout the Old Town and Lapad. Tap water is safe throughout Croatia. Travel insurance with medical coverage is strongly recommended, since public facility wait times can be slow — private clinics are fast and affordable.
Solo Women Travelers
Dubrovnik is one of the most comfortable destinations in Europe for solo women travelers. The Old Town is active, well-lit, and heavily visited; solo women are entirely normal and unremarkable. Croatian culture is respectful, and the bar and restaurant scene is welcoming. Standard awareness in the quieter back streets after midnight is the only meaningful consideration. Dress modestly when entering churches — covered shoulders required, enforced at the Dominican and Franciscan monasteries.
