Is Istanbul Safe?
Istanbul is a safe city for solo travelers within the areas visitors typically explore. Violent crime against visitors is rare. The city's real safety considerations are almost entirely about scams — taxi overcharging, the carpet-shop invitation scam, and exchange rate manipulation — irritants rather than dangers, all avoidable with basic preparation. Sultanahmet, Beyoglu, Karaköy, Cihangir, and Kadıköy are all comfortable for solo travelers day and night.

Getting Around Safely
Tram T1 — the most useful line: Sultanahmet, Grand Bazaar, Galata Bridge, Kabataş. Very safe, use Istanbulkart.
Ferry (Vapur) — public ferries to Kadıköy and Üsküdar are safe, scenic, and extremely affordable.
Metro & Funicular F1 — clean and reliable; F1 connects Kabataş to Taksim in 90 seconds.
Taxi (BiTaksi app) — use the app exclusively; it shows the fare estimate before booking and tracks the route. Never hail a street taxi near tourist sites.
Common Scams & How to Avoid Them
Carpet shop / restaurant invitation scam — a friendly local near Hagia Sophia or the Blue Mosque strikes up conversation, then invites you to a shop where prices are dramatically inflated. Politely decline shop invitations from new acquaintances.
Taxi overcharging — street taxis near tourist sites sometimes use rigged meters or long routes. Use BiTaksi exclusively.
Currency exchange manipulation — some bureaus near Sultanahmet add fees at the counter or miscount change. Use ATMs for Turkish Lira instead.
Shoe-shine drop scam — a shoe-shiner drops his brush near you; if you pick it up, he insists on polishing and charges an inflated price. Just keep walking.
Health & Medical
Dial 112 for all emergencies. American Hospital Istanbul in Nişantaşı is the top private hospital for international visitors with English-speaking staff and international insurance accepted. Pharmacies (eczane) are marked by a red crescent throughout the city. Tap water is technically safe but bottled water is cheap and widely preferred. Travel insurance with medical coverage is strongly recommended.
Solo Women Travelers
Istanbul is manageable for solo women travelers with attention to context. Karaköy, Cihangir, Beyoglu, and Kadıköy are all comfortable and welcoming at any hour, and the meyhane culture is inclusive and safe. Unsolicited male attention can be persistent in tourist areas — a firm, direct decline and continuing to walk is the standard response. Dress modestly when visiting mosques: covered shoulders, knees, and head for women. The historic peninsula is more conservative in dress expectations than Beyoglu or Karaköy.
