Is Vienna Safe?
Vienna is consistently ranked among the world's safest major cities — a destination where solo travelers can move freely, day and night, with minimal concern. The Economist Intelligence Unit has named it the world's most liveable city multiple times, and that liveability extends fully to visitors.
Vienna is so safe it will recalibrate your baseline. Petty theft in tourist hotspots is the only real consideration — relax, slow down, and enjoy it. That's entirely appropriate here.

Common Scams & How to Avoid Them
Mozart concert ticket sellers near Stephansdom and museums sell at inflated prices — buy from official venues instead.
Fiaker (horse carriage) pricing — always agree the full price and route before boarding; disputes are common.
Currency confusion — some vendors exploit exchange rate complexity. Always count your change carefully.
Overpriced Naschmarkt vendors occasionally quote tourists higher prices — compare stalls before buying.
Health & Medical
Dial 144 for ambulance, 122 for fire, 133 for police, or 112 for all emergencies. AKH (Allgemeines Krankenhaus) is one of Europe's largest and best hospitals. Apotheke pharmacies are widespread, with night pharmacies operating in rotation. Tap water is exceptional, sourced directly from the Alps. EU EHIC is accepted; travel insurance is recommended for non-EU visitors.
Solo Women Travelers
Vienna is outstanding for solo women travelers, routinely named one of Europe's top cities for female solo travel. The café culture warmly accommodates solo diners and readers — sitting alone with a Melange and a book is practically a Viennese institution. Public transport is safe at all hours. The 10th and 20th districts are the only areas where standard urban awareness applies; everywhere else, move as freely as you would in any well-run European capital.
