Cincinnati Runs the Biggest Oktoberfest Outside Germany, and It’s Not Even Close

It sounds like a stretch until you see the numbers: Cincinnati’s Oktoberfest Zinzinnati claims to be the largest Oktoberfest outside Germany itself, and the claim isn’t marketing spin. Between the 1830s and 1900, German immigrants arrived in numbers so large that, at times, half the city had German ancestry — and Over-the-Rhine, the neighborhood they built, still carries that history in its architecture and beer halls.

The festival launched in 1976 as a deliberate revival of that heritage. What makes it worth the trip today is that the neighborhood underneath it is real, not staged for the occasion.

Over-the-Rhine is dense and walkable, which makes solo exploring easy well beyond the festival itself. Findlay Market — Ohio’s oldest continuously operating public market, running since 1852 — sits right in the neighborhood and is worth a visit on its own. The festival’s beer halls run the same communal-bench format as Munich’s original: sit down, someone’s already at your table, conversation happens whether you planned on it or not.

One weekend, one seriously underrated neighborhood, and a beer festival with a stronger claim to the “largest outside Germany” title than most people would guess.
