This is a genuinely easy city to do alone during festival season. The Mission’s taquerias don’t care if you’re a party of one. North Beach’s cafés have been serving solo regulars since the Beat poets were writing there. And the festivals themselves — sprawling, walkable, no assigned seating — never once require you to have shown up with anyone.
What festival season actually buys you is permission to move between two completely different versions of the city in the same day: a loud, packed field of music in the afternoon, then a quiet walk back through a neighborhood that feels like nobody else is even in town. Few festival cities let you toggle that fast.
